Apple Tart

Apple Tart Shopping List:

1/2 cup butter
1 tab1espoon grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks, well beaten
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
4 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup walnuts, finely chopped
2 large apples, coarsely shredded

Apple Tart Preparation Instructions:

1. Cream butter with lemon peel and juice. Gradually add ½ cup sugar, creaming well. Add egg yolks in halves. beating well after each addition.
2. Blend flour, salt. and baking soda. Add in thirds to creamed mixture, beating until blended after each addition. Chill thoroughly.
3. Beat egg whites with vanilla extract until frothy. Gradually add the 2/3 cup sugar. beating well; continue beating until stiff peaks are formed. Fold in nuts and apples.
4. Roll out two thirds of the dough and line bottom of a 13×9-inch baking pan. Turn nut-apple mixture into pan and spread evenly into corners.
5. Roll pieces of remaining dough into pencil-thin strips and arrange lattice-fashion over top. Press strips slightly into filling.
6. Bake at 325° F 35 to 40 minutes. or until lightly browned. Set aside on rack to cool completely. Cut into squares and. if desired. serve topped with small scoops of vanilla ice cream.
